The Summer Hydration Trend I Didn't Expect to Love
Every summer seems to come with its own signature drink.
One year it's iced matcha. Another it's homemade lemonade or a viral smoothie recipe that somehow ends up all over social media. This summer, however, I've noticed something a little different popping up in my feed: water.
Not just plain water, but what people are calling stacked water—a simple concept that's making hydration feel a little more intentional, a little more beautiful, and honestly, a lot more enjoyable.
As someone who is constantly trying to remember where I left my coffee, answer emails during nap time, and stay hydrated while chasing after a busy little one, I wasn't exactly looking for another wellness trend. But this is one I can get behind.
Because at its heart, stacked water isn't really about wellness at all.
It's about making something you already know you should do feel a little more special.
What Is Stacked Water?
Stacked water is exactly what it sounds like: water layered with ingredients that add flavor, nutrients, or a bit of visual appeal.
Think fresh fruit, herbs, citrus, electrolytes, coconut water, cucumber, mint, or even herbal teas.
The idea is to "stack" your hydration with ingredients that support how you want to feel while still keeping water as the foundation. It's less about creating a fancy beverage and more about elevating an everyday habit.
A glass pitcher filled with lemon slices and mint leaves sitting on the counter suddenly feels like an invitation rather than a reminder.
Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
Part of the appeal is definitely aesthetic.
Let's be honest: a beautifully styled glass of citrus water photographs much better than a half-empty reusable water bottle that's been rolling around the passenger seat of your car all week.
But beyond social media, I think the popularity of stacked water speaks to something bigger. Lately, many of us seem to be craving simpler forms of wellness. We're moving away from complicated routines and endless supplements and returning to small daily practices that actually fit into real life. New moms, for example, are constantly being told to stay hydrated (among the dozens of other things we’re already doing.) The #hydratedbutmakeitcute approach stacked water provides makes an everyday task feel less mundane and adds a bit of whimsy.
Plus, hydration is one of those habits that impacts almost everything—energy, focus, digestion, skin, and overall wellbeing—but it's also one of the easiest things to neglect. Stacked water turns hydration from a task into a ritual.
And if you've been around here for a while, you know I'm a big believer in rituals.
Why I Love It
What I appreciate most about this trend is that it feels accessible. There are no expensive powders to buy or complicated recipes to follow. (Unless I feel like it.) Most of the ingredients are things I already have in my refrigerator, especially during the summer when fresh produce is everywhere.
It's also a wonderful way to use up herbs before they wilt or those extra berries that are just a day or two away from being forgotten.
More importantly, it encourages me to slow down. There's something about slicing a peach, tearing a few mint leaves, and filling a glass pitcher with ice that feels grounding in the middle of a busy day.
As a new mom, I've learned that wellness often looks less like grand gestures and more like tiny moments of care scattered throughout the day. Stacked water happens to be one of them.
Three Refreshing Stacked Water Recipes to Try This Summer
Strawberry Basil Summer Water This tastes like something you'd order at a charming café near the coast.
Ingredients:
4 cups filtered water
4–5 strawberries, sliced
4 fresh basil leaves
Juice of half a lemon
Ice
Directions Combine everything in a pitcher and allow it to sit for 30 minutes before serving.
Why You'll Love It The strawberries add subtle sweetness while the basil brings a fresh, garden-inspired flavor that feels unexpectedly elegant. Diet sodas or "zero-calorie" flavored waters.
Peach Citrus Glow Water If summer had a signature flavor, I think it would taste something like this.
Ingredients:
4 cups filtered water
1 ripe peach, sliced
1 orange, sliced
Small squeeze of lemon juice
Ice
Directions Add ingredients to a pitcher and chill for at least one hour.
Why You'll Love It The peach softens the bright citrus notes and creates a naturally sweet flavor without any added sugar.
Cucumber Mint Spa Water Simple, refreshing, and endlessly classic.
Ingredients:
4 cups filtered water
Half a cucumber, thinly sliced
Small handful fresh mint
Juice of half a lemon
Ice
Directions Combine ingredients and allow them to infuse for at least one hour before serving.
Why You'll Love It This version feels cooling and restorative—perfect after a walk, a workout, or a hot afternoon spent outside. A glass of red wine to "relax."
A Gentle Reminder
As with most trends, it's easy to get caught up in the idea that there's a "right" way to do something. But the best hydration routine is simply the one you'll stick with. Whether that's plain water, sparkling water, stacked water, or a giant tumbler you carry everywhere, consistency matters far more than perfection.
Still, if adding a few slices of fruit and herbs encourages you to refill your glass one more time throughout the day, I'd call that a worthwhile trend. This summer, I'm leaning into anything that makes everyday routines feel a little more beautiful. And if that starts with a pitcher of strawberry basil water on the kitchen counter, I'm more than happy to embrace it.
