15 Timeless Accessories That Make Every Outfit Better

I've become much more selective about what makes it into my closet. Not because I don't love fashion (and I so do) but because I've finally figured out that I don't need a completely new outfit every time I want to feel a little more pulled together.

Sometimes the outfit is fine, it just needs a belt. Or better earrings.

Accessories have always had the ability to completely change an outfit, but I appreciate them even more now. As my style has evolved, I've become less interested in pieces that scream this season and more interested in the things I'll still want to wear five or ten years from now. The best timeless accessories don't necessarily make an outfit memorable. They make you feel more like yourself in it. Here are the pieces I think are worth having in your wardrobe:

The right accessory doesn't change your outfit. It changes how finished you feel in it.

1. A Great Pair of Sunglasses

Few accessories do more work than sunglasses. A classic pair can make jeans and a white T-shirt feel like an outfit. They're practical, easy to wear, and one of those pieces where finding the right shape for your face matters much more than following a trend.

Look for a frame you'll actually want to wear every day. Black, tortoiseshell, brown, or a soft neutral are usually good places to start. And once you find a pair that makes you feel great? Keep them.

2. A Simple Gold or Silver Watch

I love the idea of a watch as a style piece rather than something you necessarily need for telling time. A simple watch adds a little polish without feeling overly accessorized. Choose the metal you naturally wear most and look for a silhouette that feels classic rather than overly trendy.

It's one of those tiny details people may not consciously notice—but the outfit somehow feels more finished.

3. A Leather Belt

A good belt is one of the easiest ways to make an outfit look intentional. Wear one with jeans and a sweater. Add one over a dress. Use one to define the waist of a blazer or coat. Black and brown will cover a lot of ground, but if you're starting with one, choose the color you naturally wear most.

And don't underestimate the buckle. A simple, understated buckle will usually have much more longevity than something overly embellished.

4. Everyday Gold Hoops

If there's one piece of jewelry I reach for constantly, it's a hoop. They don't have to be large or dramatic. In fact, a medium-sized pair that works with everything is probably the most useful version. Gold hoops with jeans. Gold hoops with a dress. Gold hoops when you're running errands. Gold hoops when you're already wearing a sweatshirt and need to look like you tried.

They're an easy shortcut to looking pulled together.

5. A Delicate Everyday Necklace

A simple necklace adds just enough detail without competing with the rest of your outfit. A fine chain, small pendant, or meaningful piece can become something you wear so often that you forget you're wearing it.

Those are my favorite kinds of accessories—the ones that eventually feel like part of you.

6. A Structured Everyday Handbag

You don't need a closet full of handbags. One great everyday bag can do a lot. Look for something that fits your actual life, whether that means a structured tote, shoulder bag, crossbody, or roomy carryall. The most important things are the ones that tend to get overlooked: Does it fit what you carry? Is it comfortable? Can you easily find your keys? Does it work with most of your wardrobe?

A beautiful bag that doesn't function for your life will eventually become closet decor.

7. A Small Evening Bag

On the other end of the spectrum, it's nice to have one bag that makes an occasion feel a little more special. A small clutch, shoulder bag, or simple evening bag in black, metallic, ivory, or another neutral can work for dinners, weddings, date nights, and events for years.

You don't need to buy a new bag every time you have somewhere to go. You need one you love.

8. A Silk Scarf

A silk scarf is one of those accessories that can look completely different depending on how you wear it. Tie it around your neck, wrap it around the handle of your handbag, wear it in your hair…

It's also one of the easiest ways to introduce color or pattern into an otherwise neutral wardrobe.

9. A Classic Hair Accessory

A beautiful claw clip, tortoiseshell barrette, simple headband, or silk scrunchie can be surprisingly useful. Especially on days when your hair isn't cooperating.

I particularly love accessories that make a simple hairstyle look intentional. A low bun and a beautiful clip can take about thirty seconds and somehow make you look like you spent much longer getting ready. I'll take that kind of efficiency every time.

The Accessories That Actually Matter

I don't think you need all of these and that's kind of the point. A timeless wardrobe isn't about collecting every classic item you can think of. It's about figuring out which pieces genuinely fit your lifestyle and then choosing those pieces well.

Maybe your version is a great pair of sunglasses, gold hoops, a leather belt, a structured bag, and loafers. Maybe you're a scarf-and-statement-earrings person. Maybe you live in sneakers and would never wear a loafer in your life. That's fine, too.

The best accessories are the ones that make your existing wardrobe work harder. They take the jeans you've worn a hundred times and make them feel slightly different. They make a simple outfit feel considered. They help you look polished without looking like you tried too hard. And as I've gotten older, that's become much more interesting to me than having a closet full of things that only work for one season.

The Accessory Test

Before buying an accessory, I like to ask myself five questions:

Will I wear this at least once a week?

Can I style it with at least three outfits I already own?

Does it work with my actual lifestyle?

Would I still like it if it weren't trending right now?

Does it make me feel more like myself?

If the answer is yes to most of those, it's probably worth considering. Because the goal isn't to have more accessories. It's to have the right ones.
